Why President Trump is right to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital

The White House to you
Friday, December 08, 2017

PROMISE KEEPER: WHY PRESIDENT TRUMP IS RIGHT TO RECOGNIZE JERUSALEM AS ISRAEL’S CAPITAL
- Matthew Continetti in The Washington Free Beacon
Matthew Continetti, editor in chief of The Washington Free Beacon, writes that President Donald J. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his decision to move the U.S. embassy is “a common sense appraisal of the world.” But it is also “one of the boldest moves any U.S. president has made since the beginning of the Oslo ‘peace process’ in 1993.”

Continetti explains that “the warnings from Trump critics that his decision may wreck the peace process ring hollow,” as there is currently “no peace process to wreck.” Applauding President Trump’s acknowledgment of Israel’s “right to determine its own capital city,” Continetti concludes that the President's decision is “something to be proud of.”

Alice Stewart writes in CNN that President Trump is “following through with his commitment” to the American people by fulfilling a major campaign promise to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The President’s announcement affirms “the need for the peace process to move ahead” and makes it clear that this is the “right time and the right step to take,” Stewart writes.

On tax reform, Adam Michel of the Heritage Foundation argues in The National Interest that “American families could finally get a real raise” from the pro-growth policies in both the House and Senate tax reform bills. Third-party analyses project these reforms could lead to an economy “almost 3 percent larger at the end of ten years . . . [translating] to more than $4,000 dollars per household, per year.”

In economic news, Berkeley Lovelace, Jr., at CNBC reports that “hiring across the U.S. was 26 percent higher last month than a year earlier,” according to a LinkedIn Workforce Report. Year to date, the hiring rate in the U.S. has been “10.4 percent higher in 2017 than in 2016.” Reports from ADP and Moody’s Analytics also show that private payrolls increased by 190,000 in November.

Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) praised President Trump in the Deseret News for remedying “one of the largest abuses of power foisted upon Utah.” Bishop thanked the President for revoking past misuse of the Antiquities Act, explaining that “we now have an administration that understands the importance of allowing local people to have a say.”

In national security news, Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) writes in NBC News that the visa lottery program “is tainted by fraud and abuse.” Following this past year’s Halloween terror attack perpetrated by a lottery visa recipient, “there is no doubt that it should be eliminated.”

‘Nothing more or less than a recognition of reality’

The White House to you
Friday, December 08, 2017

‘Nothing more or less than a recognition of reality’
President Donald J. Trump made headlines around the world yesterday by announcing the United States will officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The President also directed the State Department to begin preparations to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “When I came into office, I promised to look at the world’s challenges with open eyes and very fresh thinking,” the President said. “Old challenges demand new approaches.”
The decision drew praise even from frequent critics of the Administration. National Review’s David French called it one of President Trump’s “best, most moral, and important decisions” that “strikes a blow against international anti-Semitism.” “This is nothing more, or less, than a recognition of reality,” President Trump said. “It is also the right thing to do.”

Remembering the second worst attack on American soil
Today marks the 76th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that claimed 2,403 American lives on a single day in 1941. The President’s latest video tells the story of that fateful event that plunged America into World War II. “We remember the lives that were lost, the families torn from loved ones, and the heroes who rose to America’s defense,” the President said. “As the smoke billowed that day from our sinking ships, our entire nation rose up to show our enemies America’s unbending strength, might, and resolve.”

‘What it means to have hope’
Continuing to celebrate December’s spirit of giving, First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence visited hurricane-damaged areas of Texas yesterday to meet first responders, visit families in the process of rebuilding, and assist volunteers with their ongoing efforts to help victims. One family in particular, the Zamoranos, offers all of us a stirring example of courage this holiday season.
“I am so impressed by your positive attitudes and resilient spirit,” the First Lady said. “Your family is an example of what it means to have hope.” See pictures from the First Lady and Second Lady’s visit yesterday.

A major announcement on Jerusalem

The White House to you
Thursday, December 07, 2017

Today at 1:00 p.m. EST, President Donald J. Trump will make a major announcement on Jerusalem. Watch live here at 1:00 p.m. EST.
-------------------
‘Our hearts are encouraged by the people of Texas’
For many Americans, December will be a month of rejuvenation before the New Year. But for families who lives were turned upside down by natural disasters in Texas, California, Florida, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the road to recovery can be long and difficult—months after the news cycle has moved on to other stories.
First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will travel to Texas today to thank first responders, meet with affected families, and help volunteers at a local food bank. “Our hearts are encouraged by the people of Texas,” the Second Lady said, “and their continued enthusiasm to help each other pick up the pieces and rebuild after Hurricane Harvey.”
“As Christmas and the New Year approach, I encourage people to lend their time volunteering or providing financial support to those still reeling from the hurricanes,” the First Lady said.
Read more about the visit here.

The numbers suggest immigration enforcement is a win-win
Since the start of the Trump Administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) removal team has made 110,568 arrests—a year-over-year jump of 40 percent. This more aggressive approach to law and order comes with a twist: Apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border itself dropped this fiscal year.
This result bolsters President Trump’s core message on immigration. If America upholds the rule of law across the country, fewer immigrants will put their families at risk by crossing into the U.S. illegally. Preserving the integrity of a lawful system—including by building a physical barrier at the border—will save lives and restore the promise of a safer, happier, and more welcoming beginning for new Americans.
Regardless of ideology, that’s something we should all hope for.
See more of ICE’s “By the Numbers FY 2017” here.

‘It means a lot to us seeing the reform’
Too often when we talk about fixing the business tax code, folks in Washington picture big, multinational firms they’re familiar with: Apple, Walmart, Verizon, and so on. These companies matter, but the Fortune 500 only accounts for about 17 percent of the U.S. workforce.
Small businesses, on the other hand, employ nearly half of all American private-sector workers. The President wants to hear more of their stories. So he invited four families to join him at the White House yesterday to discuss how Congress and the Administration can help.
Their bios are impressive and distinctly American:
  • Jessica Unruh is a State Senator and coal-mining employee in North Dakota
  • Jason Beardsley is a former Special Forces veteran and co-owner of an apparel company
  • Aaron Williams is a marketing director at a creative company in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Brian Steorts is a veteran of 15 years and owner of a business called Flags of Valor

  • “It means a lot to us seeing the reform,” Beardsley said. Read the President’s remarks here.
