Today, President Trump will pardon the National Thanksgiving Turkey

The White House to you
Wednesday, November 21, 2018

West Wing Reads

Feast Your Eyes on the Two Turkeys Appealing for Presidential Pardon
“The midterms elections may have ended earlier this month but another election season is in full flight between the two turkeys vying to become this year’s official National Thanksgiving Turkey. This year’s candidates: Peas and Carrots,” Jordyn Phelps reports for ABC News.

“One of the two turkeys will be selected via an online White House poll to become this year's National Thanksgiving Turkey. The turkeys have been carefully groomed for a White House event, trained from a young age to be comfortable with lights, crowds, and music to make them comfortable in the limelight.”

Watch live at 1:05 p.m. ET: President Trump pardons the National Thanksgiving Turkey

“It's time to deck the halls: The holiday season officially kicked off at the White House Monday when President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump received the 2018 White House Christmas tree,” Betsy Klein reports for CNN. “The tree arrived at the North Portico of the White House by jingle bell-adorned horse and carriage, continuing an annual tradition.”

“A remarkably low 13 percent are calling President Trump’s economy a problem as confidence is hitting a 14-year high, and seven in 10 said 2018 is a good time to find a quality job,” Paul Bedard reports for the
Washington Examiner. The new Gallup survey shows that economic confidence for November remains at its highest since 2004. “It has been nearly two decades since Americans have been as positive about the U.S. economy as they are now,” Gallup says.

“President Donald Trump is succeeding in making China pay most of the cost of his trade war,” Xiaoqing Pi writes for
Bloomberg. “Through its strategic choice of Chinese products, the U.S. government was not only able to minimize the negative effects on U.S. consumers and firms, but also to create substantial net welfare gains in the U.S.,” a new research paper from EconPol Europe says

“As many as 10,000 migrants are believed to be traveling with caravans from Central America to the United States with the hopes of entering the country, senior administration officials said Monday,” Anna Giaritelli writes for the
Washington Examiner. “Between 8,500 and 10,500 people are making their way from Northern Triangle countries El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to America’s southern border. About 6,000 have already made it to Tijuana, a city of 1.7 million residents that sits just over the border from San Diego, Calif.”

A Real Chance at Criminal Justice Reform

The White House to you
Tuesday, November 20, 2018

West Wing Reads

A Real Chance at Criminal Justice Reform

At a White House event last week, President Donald J. Trump put his full support behind the First Step Act, praising members of “both parties for ‘pouring their hearts’ into the compromise,” The New York Times editorial board writes.

President Trump “wants to make progress on critical issues that enjoy broad support. Lawmakers from both parties should follow suit.”

In USA Today, Senior Advisor to the President Jared Kushner and Council of Economic Advisers Member Tomas Philipson write that “the bipartisan reforms supported by the president are an important broad-based approach that will, hopefully, benefit not only prisoners, but also the American public . . . Through our efforts to break the cycle of crime and reduce recidivism, we can assist more people to contribute to our society rather than be a burden to our great country.”

The Wall Street Journal editorial board says that Congress should seize this opportunity for meaningful criminal justice reform. “The broader goal is to reduce recidivism, and the model is Texas, which implemented some of the same reforms like assessing how risky a prisoner is to society. Both violent crime and incarceration rates are falling in the Lone Star State, and Indiana, Kentucky and Mississippi are trying similar reforms.”

“President Trump toured the devastation caused by the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California’s history and said he would press for better forest management to prevent future infernos,” Vivian Salama reports for
The Wall Street Journal. “Speaking to reporters alongside the ashes of a neighborhood in Paradise, Calif., Mr. Trump hailed the efforts of law-enforcement officials and first responders who continue to work to contain the blaze and help victims.”

“California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said Sunday that President Trump . . . told him that he has California's back as it deals with deadly wildfires,” Megan Keller writes in
The Hill. “The president not only has signed a presidential declaration giving California substantial funding, but he said and pledged very specifically to — to continue to help us,” Governor Brown said.

It’s the Right Time to Pass Criminal Justice Reform
“With President Trump leading the way, the push is on to get serious criminal justice reform done by Christmas. Resisters on the left and right would be fools to stand in the way,” the New York Post editorial board writes.
Earlier this week, President Trump called on Congress to pass the FIRST STEP Act, which would fund educational and vocational training programs in U.S. prisons while easing certain mandatory-minimum sentencing rules. “Trump has it right: “We’re all better off when former inmates can receive [a second chance] and re-enter society as law-abiding, productive citizens,” the Post’s editors write.

“President Trump will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Friday to seven recipients, including a trio of former professional athletes,” Tom Joyce reports for the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2QU70Oo . The Medal of Freedom is awarded to “individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” Joyce’s view: “It is fair to say this year’s recipients have done just that.”

A stronger Middle East “is an American national interest, and the Trump administration would like our friends to be working together on security and prosperity for the region, including Israel and its neighbors,” White House Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt writes in The Hill : https://bit.ly/2QNLQkJ . “All of these efforts are not meant to leave the Palestinians behind; on the contrary, they will help pave the path to a possible peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians.”

“President Trump is expected to travel to California over the weekend amid the wildfires that have ravaged both ends of the state,” Elizabeth Zwirz reports for Fox News : https://fxn.ws/2BclJ1r. “I just approved an expedited request for a Major Disaster Declaration for the State of California,” the President tweeted early this week. “Wanted to respond quickly in order to alleviate some of the incredible suffering going on. I am with you all the way. God Bless all of the victims and families affected.”

In the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2zTWdfu  , Anna Giaritelli reports that the Trump Administration has given the green light for $324 million to replace 32 miles of existing border wall in Arizona. “The replacement wall is meant to keep pedestrians and vehicles from entering the U.S. Older barriers were largely to prevent cars from driving over, but were only a few feet tall and did little to keep people from trespassing from Mexico.”

Standing up for veterans—during the National Anthem and beyond

The White House to you
Friday, November 16, 2018

1600 Daily
The White House • November 15, 2018

President Trump takes a stand for veterans

President Donald J. Trump believes in standing up for America’s veterans—both during our National Anthem and through the care and support our Government provides them with each and every day.

“Together, we will honor those who defend us. We will cherish those who protect us. And we will celebrate the amazing heroes who keep America safe and strong and proud and free,” President Trump said today. “To every veteran and military family across our land, I want to express the eternal gratitude and thanks of our entire Nation.”

Earlier today, the President and First Lady Melania Trump visited the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., thanking service members and providing them with desserts in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday next week. The First Couple also spent time with the Marines who bravely responded to a building fire at the Arthur Senior Public Housing complex in Washington on September 19.

Later in the afternoon, President Trump hosted veterans and military families at the White House in celebration of National Veterans and Military Families Month. He took time during the event to explain his commitment to our country’s heroes:
  • In June, the President signed the VA MISSION Act, which unleashes the largest reform of the Veterans Affairs system in half a century.

  • Since Inauguration Day, the Trump Administration has prioritized accountability at the VA, removing more than 3,600 Government employees who weren't treating our veterans with the respect and care they deserve.

  • Programs at the VA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have helped nearly 54,000 veterans find permanent housing—and thanks to a booming economy, veterans’ unemployment is near a two-decade low.
How President Trump is honoring the sacrifices of America’s veterans

Watch: The President and First Lady visit the Marine Barracks
The turkeys are coming!
Next week, President Trump will continue the time-honored White House tradition of officially pardoning the National Thanksgiving Turkey. Before he does, Americans will vote on which turkey he pardons.

Be the first to know when voting begins!

Yet all along, the truth was that the U.S. could be a global energy powerhouse. Now, with President Donald Trump in the White House calling for U.S. energy dominance, everyone knows that to be the case.”

“The booming U.S. economy, jump-started by the 2017 GOP tax cut, has created 878,000 more millionaires in just the last 12 months, according to an international wealth report from Credit Suisse,” Paul Bedard reports for the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2QG0Ell. “’The boom goes on,’ cheers the Credit Suisse's Global Wealth Report.”

President Trump’s announcement yesterday on prison reform shows he is ready and willing to work with Democrats on a bipartisan basis, Kayleigh McEnany reports for Fox News : https://fxn.ws/2RQNq5A. “White House Senior Advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are among top Trump administration officials who have laid the groundwork for bipartisanship in an era of divided government – a rare feat indeed.”

President Trump backs historic prison reform

The White House to you
Friday, November 16, 2018

1600 Daily
                                              The White House • November 14, 2018
President Trump backs historic prison reform

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. today, President Donald J. Trump called on Congress to take action and support the FIRST STEP Act, a bipartisan bill that will reform America’s prisons and improve our Nation’s criminal justice system.

“Our whole Nation benefits if former inmates are able to reenter society as productive, law-abiding citizens,” the President says.

One-in-three American adults today has some type of criminal record, and more than 2 million Americans are in prison—including 181,000 in Federal penitentiaries. More than 95 percent of these inmates will eventually leave prison and face the challenge of restarting their lives. Among Federal inmates today, nearly 40 percent will be rearrested within five years of release.

That outcome helps no one. The FIRST STEP Act will make our communities safer by making our justice system work better in three key ways:
  1. Provide incentives for low-risk inmates to receive crucial support services, including vocational training and faith-based programs to ease reentry

  2. House more prisoners in facilities closer to their own communities, allowing for family visitation and greater local support

  3. Roll back certain provisions of former President Clinton’s infamous crime law, reforming mandatory minimums that have led to racially discriminatory outcomes and increased prison overcrowding
Get the facts: President Trump backs historic prison reform

Vice President Mike Pence is in Asia this week, representing the United States in a series of key summits throughout the region. His mission is simple: advance President Trump’s vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

“The United States seeks collaboration, not control,” the Vice President wrote in The Washington Post before departing. “We seek an Indo-Pacific — from the United States to India, from Japan to Australia, and everywhere in between — where sovereignty is respected, where commerce flows unhindered and where independent nations are masters of their own destinies.”

On North Korea, the Vice President was clear. “The pressure campaign will continue, and the sanctions will remain in full force, until we achieve the final, fully verified denuclearization,” he said in a joint press statement alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “The United States, Japan, and the world will accept nothing less.”

Watch President Trump speak at Suresnes Cemetery in France

The White House to you
Wednesday, November 14, 2018

1600 Daily

The 100th anniversary of World War I’s end

On November 11, 1918, the United States joined its fellow Allies in signing an Armistice with Germany that officially ended the fighting in World War I. Exactly 100 years to the day later, President Donald J. Trump stood at Suresnes American Cemetery near Paris, France, honoring the 116,000 Americans who died in that war.

“Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1,500 U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War,” President Trump said. “In that treacherous forest and the surrounding fields, American Marines, soldiers, and Allied Forces fought—and they fought through hell—to turn the tide of the war.”

In Paris, the President and First Lady joined French President Emmanuel Macron, his wife First Lady Brigitte Macron, and other world leaders for the Centennial Commemoration of Armistice Day at the Arc de Triomphe.

“The American and French patriots of World War I embody the timeless virtues of our two republics: honor and courage; strength and valor; love and loyalty; grace and glory,” President Trump said. “It is our duty to preserve the civilization they defended and to protect the peace they so nobly gave their lives to secure one century ago.”

3 big ways President Trump is putting veterans first
“To the 20 million veterans alive today: this Veterans Day, we recommit ourselves to providing you with the care you deserve,” President Trump writes in his 2018 Veterans Day Proclamation.

This President’s commitment to veterans goes beyond rhetoric. In addition to rebuilding America’s military strength to better serve the heroes of today, the Trump Administration has made caring for U.S. veterans a top priority in three big ways:

  1. Honoring our veterans’ service: "We stand up for America. We stand up for the patriots who defend America. And we stand up for our National Anthem,” President Trump told Veterans of Foreign Wars this summer.

  2. Reforming veterans care: The President signed the VA Mission Act into law in June, which enacts sweeping reforms to modernize veterans care and give patients access to walk-in treatment.

  3. Holding the VA accountable: From the start of the Trump Administration through the end of this May, the Department of Veterans Affairs took more than 3,200 accountability actions against employees for misconduct or poor performance, resulting in more than 2,500 removals from positions.

The facts: How President Trump is honoring his commitment to our veterans

Vice President Mike Pence: Veterans Day – Veterans have no better friend than President Trump
Vice President Mike Pence writes in Fox News that “the debt our nation owes those who have worn the uniform is a debt we will never be able to fully repay.”
But just as America’s veterans have fought for us, “our entire administration has fought for them,” the Vice President continues. “President Trump has signed the most substantial veterans’ health-care reform in a generation, making Veterans Choice a permanent part of American law.”

“President Trump spoke without an umbrella during a cold, rainy Veterans Day ceremony in France. The ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery near Paris was Trump's final scheduled stop before returning to the U.S.,” Steven Nelson reports for the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2Q0oyec. “It is our duty to preserve the civilization they defended and to protect the peace they so nobly gave their lives to secure one century ago,” President Trump said.

In The Hill : https://bit.ly/2z8HZYN , U.S. Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher and Polish Ambassador to the United States Piotr Wilczek write about America’s growing bond with Poland under President Trump. “Today, a century after Poland regained its independence, 30 years after the fall of communism and 20 years after Poland joined NATO, the bond between the United States and Poland is stronger than ever, and we are ready to face the next 100 years together.”

In The Daily Signal : https://dailysign.al/2FeFeum, Rachel Greszler details how President Trump has been cracking down on wasted time and money at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Under the Obama Administration, excessive costs and detrimental activities were all too common at the VA. But “President [Donald] Trump has made it clear: VA employees should always put veterans first,” Acting VA Assistant Secretary Jacquelyn Hayes-Byrd said

President Trump Moves to Limit Asylum Protections for Migrants Who Cross the Border Illegally

President Donald J. Trump has signed a presidential Proclamation barring asylum protections for migrants who enter the U.S. illegally, Robert Donachie reports for the Washington Examiner.
“We want people to come into our country, but they have to come into the country legally,” the President said. America’s asylum system has been overwhelmed with meritless claims in an attempt to game the process, preventing U.S. officials from being able to expeditiously grant asylum to those who truly need it.

In The Washington Times : https://bit.ly/2Dd9SSo, Ronald Kessler writes that “former President Obama has been claiming credit for the Trump economic boom, saying he paved the way for President Trump’s remarkable success. Not quite.” Kessler explains that President Obama in fact presided over the slowest recovery since the Great Depression. “Rather than paving the way for the Trump economic boom, the growth in quarterly gross domestic product actually slowed near the end of the Obama presidency.”

In The Washington Post : https://wapo.st/2Dffc7U  , American Enterprise Institute Fellow Marc Thiessen writes that Americans rejected the Democrats’ smear campaign against Justice Brett Kavanaugh in this week’s midterm elections. “The lesson for Democrats should be clear: Character assassination does not pay. Quite the opposite, it backfired — big-time.”

In The Hill : https://bit.ly/2SYKvsV  , economist Pinar Cebi Wilber argues that President Trump’s United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is a no-brainer for Congress to approve. “The economic benefits of the United States’ participation as an energy trading partner with Canada and Mexico cannot be overstated,” she says. “Without a modernized agreement between the three countries in place, the future of the U.S. energy market would be much more uncertain.”

America’s flag flies at half-staff tonight

The White House to you
Friday, November 09, 2018

1600 Daily

America’s flag flies at half-staff tonight
Late last night, 12 people were killed in a horrific shooting in Thousand Oaks, California. This morning, President Donald J. Trump signed a Proclamation as America mourns alongside the victims’ families and communities.

“As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence,” President Trump writes, “I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, November 10, 2018.”

President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were briefed on the shooting and the police response early this morning. “Great bravery shown by police. California Highway Patrol was on scene within 3 minutes, with first officer to enter shot numerous times. That Sheriff’s Sergeant died in the hospital,” the President
tweeted.

God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. Thank you to Law Enforcement.”

Read the President’s Proclamation remembering the victims in Thousand Oaks.

Acts of courage: Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus “died a hero.”
The Day Ahead
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump joined the 114th Justice of the United States, Brett M. Kavanaugh, for his traditional investiture ceremony at the U.S. Supreme Court this morning.

The investiture ceremony marks when a new Justice formally takes his or her spot on the High Court. The President and First Lady joined Justice Kavanaugh, seven of the other justices, and numerous public officials for the occasion. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the judicial oath to Justice Kavanaugh just after 10 a.m.

Justice Kavanaugh was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 6, and began hearing oral arguments a few days later on October 9.

President Trump Calls Mass Shooting at Club in Thousand Oaks, California, ‘Terrible,’ Says He's Been Briefed

“President Donald Trump responded to a mass shooting at a Southern California music club, calling it ‘terrible’ and saying he has been ‘fully briefed’ on the incident,” Cheyenne Haslett reports for ABC News. The President commended the “great bravery shown by police,” thanking law enforcement and asking that God bless all of the victims and their families following this horrible incident.

“Brett Kavanaugh formally takes his seat as the 114th justice at the traditional investiture ceremony at the Supreme Court Thursday morning,” Nina Totenberg reports for NPR : https://n.pr/2QurP2F. “President Trump and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to attend the ceremony.” On October 6, Justice Kavanaugh was confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and he began hearing arguments on October 9

In The Washington Post : https://wapo.st/2yWXJ0U  , Ed Rogers writes that by most measures, Republicans beat the odds of history and nearly everyone’s expectations for the 2018 midterms. “The instant analysis is clear: Democrats may have won the House, but Trump won the election.” President Trump and his allies “have an appeal that the elites in New York and Hollywood cannot dismiss or combat.”

“Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday that this week's midterm elections were the ‘most secure’ the U.S. has ever seen,” Anna Giaritelli writes in the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2PM58cX. “Nielsen's department took the lead on election security in early 2017. That job included helping all 10,000 state and local jurisdictions prepare for Election Day.” Giaritelli adds that “DHS has not reported any mass fraudulent voting, amended vote counts, or abnormal disruptions in the nationwide vote.”

Americans Aren’t Just Happy About the Economy

Americans Aren’t Just Happy About the Economy

“The President elected two years ago to revive American prosperity is now presiding over an economic boom. The first two years of the Trump era have been so good that his predecessor has lately been barnstorming the country trying to persuade voters that we’re still living in the Obama era. It is the sincerest form of political flattery,” James Freeman writes in The Wall Street Journal.

Republicans expanded their majority in the U.S. Senate in yesterday’s midterm elections, “riding a Trump train fueled by red-state enthusiasm,” David M. Drucker writes in the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2D8zShB. “Our president has made such a difference already, he’s energized the Republican Party again. It’s so exciting to see that happen and he’s making a difference all across the board,” one Tennessee voter said.

“The ratio of unemployed workers to open jobs hovered at a record low in September” according to the Department of Labor, Joseph Lawler reports for the Washington Examiner : https://washex.am/2RFxByp  . “There were 0.9 unemployed workers for every job vacancy listed in the month, a ratio the agency said was the lowest since it's been keeping track and that hasn't been recorded before this year.”

In CNBC : https://cnb.cx/2JNnWmP, Michael Sheetz writes that service-sector growth for October was strong and the economy remains hot. “The data release also came after ADP and Moody's Analytics reported [last] Wednesday better-than-expected payrolls creation for October. The two firms said . . . private companies added 227,000 payrolls last month.”

“Mexico launched a ‘Make Yourself at Home’ program, offering migrants shelter, food, work and schools for their kids. Most turned it down,” Betsy McCaughey in the New York Post : https://nyp.st/2F9qLzM. The reality is that most migrants in the caravan headed toward America’s border are in search of a lifestyle upgrade, not fleeing genuine violence or persecution.
