Trump’s first-year jobs numbers were very, very good

The White House to you
Saturday, January 06, 2018

Trump’s first-year jobs numbers were very, very good
Philip Bump in The Washington Post takes an in-depth look at jobs numbers during President Donald J. Trump’s first year. “We can now compare Trump’s first year in office to his predecessors’,” Bump writes. His conclusion? “Trump comes out looking pretty good.”
“Relative to the figure from January in each president’s first year in office (excluding those presidents who took office after a death or resignation), Trump saw one of the biggest percentage-point drops in the unemployment rate,” Bump says.

Harvard economist Robert J. Barro argues in The Wall Street Journal that “the recently enacted tax package promises to raise economic growth substantially over the short and long run.” By how much? According to Barro's research, “Cutting the average marginal tax rate for individuals by 1 percentage point increases gross domestic product by 0.5% over the next two years,” he says. “This means the tax bill’s average cut of 3.2 points should expand the economy by 1.6% through 2019.”

Jay Timmons, CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, writes in Real Clear Politics that manufacturers intend to deliver on the promise of tax reform by hiring more workers, creating more well-paying jobs, investing in their communities, and putting “more money in the pockets of manufacturing workers.”

In National Review, Victor Davis Hanson says that the Trump Administration—unlike many previous presidencies—has completely reversed course from his predecessor’s ideology. “Obama was a genuine man of the Left,” Hanson writes, whereas President Trump has governed so far as a committed conservative. “Judge the ideologies by their results,” Hanson suggests.

Corey Lewandowski in The Hill argues that as the mainstream media focuses disproportionately on scandals, Russia, and the President’s Twitter feed, they are missing the issues that matter most to Americans: the economy and national security. On both fronts, the outcomes have been remarkably good during President Trump’s first year.

‘You gave us a deadline’

The White House to you
Saturday, January 06, 2018

‘You gave us a deadline’ “We’re all working in an effort to develop an immigration reform plan that will serve the interests of the American workers,” President Donald J. Trump said yesterday.
The President’s remarks came after he and Vice President Mike Pence sat down with a Republican Senate working group on immigration in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.
Several quotes after the meeting reveal what 2018 could hold for one of the President’s signature issues:
* Vice President Pence: “We’re going to enforce the laws of this country for the citizens of this country. . . . We’re going to do it with a big heart.” * Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) to the President: “Immigration issues are very hard, they’re very emotional. But there’s been no deadline . . . You gave us a deadline.
* President Trump: “If we have support from the Democrats, I think DACA is going to be terrific. . . We need protection. We need the wall. We need all of those things.”
Read how the President thinks bipartisan immigration reform can happen in 2018.
Vice President Pence: ‘Trump will not be silent’
In an op-ed for The Washington Post, Vice President Pence drew a sharp distinction between how President Trump and former President Barack Obama handled mass Iranian protests against that country’s oppressive regime.
“Where his predecessor stayed silent in 2009,” the Vice President wrote, “Trump swiftly offered the Iranian people America’s unwavering support. He has also committed to provide assistance in the days ahead.”
The Vice President’s closing lines remind us that America is strongest on the world stage when it stands behind its values. “That is the essence of American leadership.”
Dow breaks 25,000 for the first time ever
CNBC and others reported yesterday that the Dow Jones Industrial Average has cleared the 25,000 mark for the first time—“tying the fastest 1,000-point move in its history,” writes Fred Imbert.
A quotable snippet from Imbert’s piece: “While it’s symbolically important, the real story is never just a number. It’s the underlying strength that is pushing markets this high,” said Steve Claussen, vice president of trader strategy at ETRADE.

‘The defining accomplishment of his first year’

The White House to you
Friday, January 05, 2018

‘The defining accomplishment of his first year’ In the closing days of 2017, President Donald J. Trump’s critics and supporters alike ticked off the major achievements of his first year in office: tax cuts, Neil Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court, and a booming stock market, among others.
Yet the Bureau of Land Management’s reversal last month of an Obama-era energy policy flew largely under the radar, and it underscores one of the crucial missions of this presidency.
“The Trump administration rounded out the Year of Deregulation in appropriate fashion, rescinding a rule intended to punish oil and gas producers,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote in an editorial this week. That regulation “would have added millions of dollars to the cost of fracking operations” with duplicative red tape.
Here’s the key: “Fracking is already subjected to scores of regulations at the federal, state and tribal levels. That won’t change,” the editorial says. In other words, simplifying government doesn’t mean it’s going away.
Read why the Review-Journal says deregulation may be what matters most.
Saying what we mean
“To see the people of Iran rising up to demand change in their country should hearten every freedom-loving American,” Vice President Mike Pence told Greta Van Susteren in an interview yesterday.
The Vice President’s point was simple: An America that’s clear about what it stands for has a genuine opportunity to shape a world that’s freer and more democratic. And we can do so peacefully.
“My hope, and really my prayer, is that the people of Iran — a youthful population, a well-educated population — understand that the United States of America and the people of this country are their natural ally.”
See what Van Susteren asked the Vice President about Iran and North Korea.
Getting to ‘yes’ on a bipartisan budget deal
Yesterday, Republicans and Democrats in Congress outlined their priorities for a two-year bipartisan spending agreement.
The White House and Republican leadership on Capitol Hill were clear about what they expect from a deal. “The American people deserve a government that funds our great military, protects our borders, and leads to a more prosperous future for all,” they said in a joint statement.
