President Trump: America’s economy is back and roaring and its people are winning
“On this Tax Day, America is strong and roaring back. Paychecks are climbing. Tax rates are going down. Businesses are investing in our great country. And most important, the American people are winning,” President Donald J. Trump writes in USA Today.

------------ In the New Hampshire Union Leader, Kimberly Houghton reports that Ivanka Trump and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin “visited the Granite State Tuesday - the final day to file 2017 taxes without an extension - to say relief is on the way for the middle class and small businesses.” Ms. Trump told the crowd of about 150 “that the new tax law means more money in pay checks and higher wages, which together are an investment in the next generation of Americans.”
------------
In The Washington Times, Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) writes that America’s national security is in good hands with former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton advising President Trump. “Bolton is exceptionally qualified to serve as President Trump’s National Security Adviser, and I fully support his selection,” Rep. McSally says.
------------
Daniel Hoffman, former Chief of Station for the CIA, writes in The Hill that in light of Gina Haspel’s “exceptional qualifications to lead the CIA with the highest moral and ethical standards,” there is “no doubt that our country’s national security would be best served if she were confirmed as the CIA’s next director.”
------------
Iranian human rights activist Amir Basiri writes in the Washington Examiner that President Trump’s strike on Syria sent a “very damning message” to Iran. Basiri explains that “this attack enjoyed vast international support and bipartisan political backing in Congress, a clear sign of the mounting isolation Tehran and Damascus are dealing with.”

5 ways the new tax code will be better

The White House to you

Driving the Day

President Donald J. Trump will host Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Florida today. The President has a strong personal relationship with Prime Minister Abe, and two topics will lead the discussion: preparation for U.S. talks with North Korea and America’s recent moves to fix trade deals.
5 ways the new tax code will be better

Today is the deadline to file 2017 Federal income taxes. It also marks the last time that taxpayers will have to deal with America’s old, broken tax code. Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that President Trump signed in December, hardworking Americans will keep more of what they earn in 2018 and beyond.
Five big changes stand out: 1) Lower tax rates for Americans across the board; 2) a nearly doubled standard deduction; 3) a doubled child tax credit to help families, along with better saving options for education; 4) a simpler process to make filing taxes less of a headache; and 5) relief from the Affordable Care Act’s ineffective mandate.
On the business side, tax reform is unleashing growth. Small business confidence surged to a record high following the passage of tax cuts, and it remains at historically high levels. Employers are ready to expand—good news for workers as the unemployment rate remains at a 17-year low of 4.1 percent.

Restoring America’s legacy in space

Space exploration “is essential to the very character of America," Vice President Mike Pence told leaders at the 34th Space Symposium in Colorado Springs yesterday. “President Trump has been working to keep his promise to restore America’s proud legacy of leadership in space.” Space exploration is crucial for both national security and national prosperity, the Vice President said.
He also announced the next chapter for America in space. The National Space Council, which the Vice President chairs, has developed the first thorough space traffic management policy. It will address a congested space environment of more than 1,500 active satellites—and thousands more inactive ones and spacecraft fragments. “A stable and orderly space environment is critical,” Vice President Pence said.

President Donald Trump's textbook surgical strike sent the right message to Syria, Bashar Assad

“Friday night’s multinational raid on Syria’s chemical weapons infrastructure was well planned, well conducted and by all reports effective,” defense expert James Robbins writes in USA Today. Robbins adds that the President’s actions “should be viewed both as strategic messaging to deter future Syrian chemical attacks, and as part of a broader concept for quickly resolving the civil war on favorable terms.”

------------ “It is in the name of fair, reciprocal and ultimately free and prosperous trade that President Trump is standing up to China’s intellectual-property theft and other unfair trade practices,” White House National Trade Council Director Peter Navarro writes in The Wall Street Journal. “The president has the backs of American workers, farmers and businesses.”
------------
In The Hill, former State Department Senior Advisor Christian Whiton writes that President Trump has “restored the credibility of the presidency by establishing a cost for dictators who cross red lines related to chemical weapons. As such, his administration’s accomplishments in Syria are twofold. Mission accomplished.”
------------
Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke writes in the Boston Globe that “thanks to President Trump’s policy of ‘energy dominance,’ America is now on a path to become a leading global energy exporter and free from being held hostage by foreign powers.” Secretary Zinke notes that President Trump’s “‘all-of-the-above’ approach is one in which both market forces and sound national security and energy policy determine the types of energy America produces.”
------------
“Kroger said Monday it will spend five times the previous amount on tuition reimbursement as it unveiled its plans for the Republican tax cuts signed into law by President Trump,” the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. “Both full and part-time employees who have worked for Kroger six months will now be eligible for up to $3,500 in tuition reimbursement each year,” Alexander Coolidge writes.

America and its allies respond in Syria

The White House to you
Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Driving the Day
•

President Donald J. Trump will meet with Hispanic-American business leaders in Florida today to discuss the effects of tax cuts on their companies. Watch live at 12:40 PM ET.
•
Vice President Mike Pence will address the 34th Space Symposium in Colorado. The Vice President chairs the White House’s National Space Council. Watch live at 1:55 PM ET.
•
In his weekly address, President Trump tells Americans that unfair trade deals have “financed the rise of other countries at the expense of our own middle class.” Watch here.
America and its allies respond in Syria
Devastating images from Syria reveal the unique and gruesome danger of chemical weapons. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s April 7 attack on innocent civilians violated international law, the Chemical Weapons Convention, and several United Nations Security Council Resolutions. He must be held accountable.
On Friday, the United States and its allies responded. President Trump ordered U.S. Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with Syrian chemical weapons capabilities. He thanked Britain and France for joining America in the operation, using their “righteous power against barbarism and brutality.”
The strikes were legitimate, proportionate, and justified. Most important, they were necessary. Even small amounts of chemical weapons can unleash widespread destruction. To prevent their spread, everyone must understand that the costs of using chemical weapons will always outweigh any military or political benefits. See more: President Trump takes action to end Syria’s chemical weapons attacks
Vice President Pence in South America
On Friday, Vice President Pence traveled to Lima, Peru, to represent the United States at the opening ceremony of the Summit of the Americas. “Ours was always meant to be a hemisphere of freedom,” he told the Summit.
It was also opportunity to show where America stands. Vice President Pence held bilateral meetings with key U.S. allies, including the leaders of Colombia, Chile, Canada, and Mexico. He also met with Venezuelan opposition leaders, telling them “the simple truth is that Nicolas Maduro has turned Venezuela democracy into dictatorship.”
